So, Pokémon still seems to be taking over the world. You can’t look at social media, the news, or out your own window without seeing someone scurrying around face down to their phone playing Pokémon Go. So why not embrace the
insanity nostalgia and pack yourself (or, ya know, your child) a Pokémon bento?
Whether you’re taking it to work (I’m sure no one has noticed you catching Pidgeys at your desk) or your kid is taking it to school, this lunch box is sure to gain you some serious street cred.
For the main course (i.e. Pikachu himself) just cook some brown rice in a mix of spices to create that famous shade of yellow. For our bento, we used this mix:
- 1/2 cup vegetable broth
- 1/4 cup dry brown rice
- 1/2 teaspoon olive oil
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 teaspoon turmeric
- 1/8 teaspoon curry powder
- 1/8 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1/8 teaspoon onion powder
Just bring the vegetable broth to a boil, then mix in the remaining ingredients. Cook until the rice is soft and fluffy. Decorate Pikachu’s face with cut out nori, sliced cherry tomatoes, and little pieces of mozzarella cheese.
For the sides, be sure to pack in a solid serving of fruits and vegetables (hunting Pokémon require serious energy). Amp up the cuteness by using mini cookie cutters to make bite-sized shapes. To created the Pokéballs shown above, slice two cherry tomatoes and two mini mozzarella balls in half, then stick together. Wrap horizontally with a thin strip of cut nori. To keep them from sliding apart, secure the layers in place with toothpicks.
