Spiked Seltzer is the Refreshing Boozy Hydration You Need This Summer

Let’s start this off with a bold statement: Spiked sparkling water is the drink you want to finish out this summer on.

Forgo hefty the craft beers and sugary ciders. Forget the mouth-parching wines and sh*tty fruity wine coolers. Say goodbye, for now, to hard liquor this and tequila that. Spiked sparkling water is light and refreshing. It’s what you want to bring with you to the pool as a less intense, lower-calorie, certainly less bloat-y, alternative to beer. (For the record: Beer is great. Feeling puffy in a swimsuit is not).

Because we’re committed (and it was a rough weekday afternoon, okay?) to making sure you all buy the best stuff out there, we did a full taste test on a product that grabbed our attention, a pre-mixed bottled alcoholic beverage that actually sounded legit: Truly Spiked & Sparkling. With 100 calories and only two grams of carbs per (12-oz.) bottle, Truly Spiked & Sparkling bills itself as the “lowest-calorie and lowest-carb spiked sparkling water available.” It contains 5% alcohol by volume, which is about as much as some blonde beers and ales. And yes, they’re gluten-free.

Especially for day-drinking occasions, we really dig this crisp spiked sparklers. They’re made with zero artificial sweeteners or flavorings, and they don’t leave any weird sticky sour feels in your mouth (you know what I’m talking about… think about the last time you were drinking beer or someones mystery tequila concoction in the sun for 4 hours). Currently, Truly Spiked & Sparkling has three flavors: Grapefruit & Pomelo, Colima Lime, and Pomegranate. Here are our thoughts on each:

Grapefruit & Pomelo:

The good: Light, refreshing, and smells and tastes like an actual grapefruit in the best way possible. It has a perfect delicate just-sweet-enough tartness. One taster said it’s “like light prosecco.”

The bad: Nada.

Conclusion: If you love grapefruit, you’ll love this.

Colima Lime:

The good: Very mild, but pleasant, lime flavor. Light and refreshing.

The bad: “Tastes like cleaning soap,” a couple tasters said.

Conclusion: The light, not super alcohol-y lime flavor was a favorite among a select few, however most found it rather “meh” and medicinal.

Pomegranate:

The good: Again, so refreshing (bubbles for the win). Tasters said it’s what they’d want to drink at the beach (really, the same can be said for all of the flavors) and that they couldn’t tell there was any booze in it (maybe that’s a bad—or at least dangerous—thing?).

The bad: Too sugary tasting for some. The flavor was less pomegranate and more grapefruit-esque.

Conclusion: Still good (as in, we would definitely still drink it) but not quite as true-to-promised-flavor as we’d hoped.

Our ranking:

1. Grapefruit & Pomelo

2. Pomegranate

3. Colima Lime

Each Truly Spiked & Sparkling flavor is sold in 6-packs at select markets nationwide for $9.99 to $10.99 (depending on where you are). To see where you can find Truly near you, check out their locator at trulyspikedsparkling.com.
