Today, Fortune released the 62nd iteration of the Fortune 500–a compilation of the largest corporations in the U.S. based on revenue for their respective fiscal year. For details on how the rankings are determined, take a peak at Fortune‘s methodology here.
This annual list of 500 companies reps 2/3 of our nation’s GDP with $12 trillion in revenues, $840 billion in profits, and $17 trillion in market value. In total, the companies named on this year’s list employ 27.9 million people worldwide. In other words, it’s worth taking a look at as in some way, shape, or form, these companies likely impact your life.
That being that, here are the companies most likely to influence the way you eat and drink.
For food production, Chicago-based Archer Daniels Midland, and American global food processing and commodities trading corporation, ranks highest at close to $68 billion. Closely followed by Tyson foods at roughly $41 billion. See complete list here.
For food services, it comes as no shock that McDonald’s and Starbucks sit at the top of the rankings, followed by Yum Brands (i.e. KFC, Taco Bell, Pizza Hut, and WingStreet), Darden Restaurants (restaurants like Olive Garden and LongHorn Steakhouse), and Chipotle. For food consumer products, we have some usual suspects claiming the top spots: PepsiCo (ranking #44 out of the entire 500), Mondelez International, Kraft Heinz, General Mills, and ConAgra Foods. See complete list here.
For food and drug stores, CVS Health reigns supreme (in the top 10 of the entire 500), followed by Kroger, Walgreens, Publix, and Rite Aid. Just a little further down, we find grocery stores associated with terms like organic, local, and quality [and pricey], such as Whole Foods and Sprouts. See complete list here.
