Let’s Get Real About Mother’s Day

Right about now your newsfeed is likely cluttered with gorgeous brunch recipes to make for Mother’s Day weekend. That’s great if you’re cooking for your mom, grandma, or mother-in-law, but what about if it’s just you, or just you, your spouse, and your kids?

I love my husband, and he is willing to do many things, but make a crustless quiche topped with roasted tomatoes is likely not high on his list of must-makes on Sunday morning. To be honest, it’s not on my list for him to make it either, because that means while he’s toiling away in the kitchen, I’ll be soothing hungry kiddos while really wondering why we didn’t go out for donuts.

This Mother’s Day, I started to think about what I really wanted to do. Donuts were out, because that much sugar that early in the day leads to major regret for this mommy of two under three. Going out didn’t appeal to me, because, well, lines, waits, and overpaying for what I could easily make at home.

Instead, I’m going to ask Dad to keep an eye on the little guy (at just one, he’s too little to be of much help in the kitchen), and my toddler and I are going to get our hands dirty. We’ve been practicing this week, starting with pizza. She sliced the mozzarella with a butter knife, spread the sauce, and waited patiently for it to cook and cool before tasting it and declaring it the best pizza ever.

Next up, she was in charge of slicing fruit (again, with her butter knife) to give to her brother. The two of them turned it into a game and, before I knew it, the lowly melon, everyone’s least favorite from the bowl, was gone.

Last night, our plan was to make banana muffins for today’s breakfast, but, sadly, I’d let the bananas go a little too brown, so that they were almost liquid and had to be tossed. We switched gears to cookies instead, and I can say that my newly-turned three year old did everything from manning the mixer to cracking the eggs. I’ve never seen her so proud.

This weekend, get cooking with your kids. We cleaned as we went, talking about every part of the recipe from measuring to pouring, and we had a blast.

Let’s get real this Mother’s Day. What are we going to make? Probably overnight French toast (a favorite!), but here are a few other ideas, too.

I love the French Toast. It uses canned peaches, whole milk (but you can use whatever you have on hand), eggs, and pantry ingredients.

This one takes a little more time, but it’s great recipe that freezes well, so you can make it any weekend, then treat yourself.
