Starbucks fans, assemble! If you’ve been busy and haven’t heard about the new drinks that just dropped from the Starbuck’s menu, you’re in luck, because we tried them and we’ve definitely got some info to fill you in on. These new flavors come just a little over a month after the Latte Macchiato dropped and created some waves in the Starbucksphere. Now, coffee and tea lovers alike can grab a hold of the new flavors of Smoked Butterscotch and Citrus Green Tea, which you can get as either a latte or as a blended frappuccino (at participating locations, for a limited time only). To be fair, we tried them both in each variety. While these drinks definitely aren’t the healthiest, as our sister brand Cooking Light found out, these might be a great choice for an indulgent cheat-day treat. Here’s what we thought!
Jessica Colyer, Production Assistant: “The green tea one is really good! In either form, latte or frappuccino, the flavor is really great. They use Matcha powder for the green tea, which can kind have a little bit of a chalky texture, but the green tea flavor is definitely there, and not overpowered by a syrupy sweetener, which was really nice. The citrus is kind of an aftertaste with this one, but I still like that it’s there. The butterscotch on the other hand has a very poignant buttery and smokey flavor, which I’ve heard people are likening to the Butterbeer that you can get at Universal Studio’s Harry Potter World. While I’m just as much of an HP fan as the next person, for me, the butterscotch just wasn’t my favorite.”
Katie Hanley, Production Assistant: “I’m typically not a big coffee drinker, but I have had my fair share of quick pick-me-ups back in my college days (however, probably more similar to a Milky Way than your average cup of joe). But after taste-testing these new Starbucks flavors I have to say, I really enjoyed both of them! If I had to pick a favorite, I’d go with the Smoked Butterscotch Latte — especially on a brisk February day, like today. The latte version really enhanced the rich flavor of the butterscotch, whereas the frappuccino seemed a bit too cloudy with smoke for my palate. On the flip side, I actually prefer the Citrus Matcha Frap to it’s latte counterpart. The flavors were pleasing with light and fruity notes, perfect for cooling off on a hot summer day. The final verdict? I’d definitely get them again!”
Emma Crist, Assistant Editor: “Even though I love green tea, I just discovered I’m not a fan of the flavor in a latte or frappuccino. It doesn’t taste like authentic matcha to me, and I thought it was too sweet to boot. As for the Smoked Butterscotch Latte and Frapp, the steamed milk, espresso and butterscotch sauce are a surprisingly satisfying combo. Though the name of the drink itself makes it sound sickeningly sweet—it isn’t! I’d order this one on a cheat day.”
