Today marks the beginning of the Chinese New Year! The most widely held holiday in China is now celebrated all over the world in places such as London, New York, and Korea as a way to honor family, friends, and prepare for the good fortune to come. Red is the color of the holiday, which in traditional Chinese culture is a color that signifies good luck and good fortune. In fact, the color red is seen everywhere in China during this annual celebration in the forms of lanterns, decorations, and gifts. Every Chinese New Year features a new animal, and this year is the Year of the Monkey. What does that mean exactly? Well, the last time we had a Year of the Monkey was in 2004, and according to ChinaHighlights.com, “People born in a year of the Monkey are witty, intelligent, and have a magnetic personality.” Want to learn more about your own Chinese Zodiac animal? As with all holidays, gathering around the table with family and friends for a great meal is always a wonderful thing, and we’ve compiled some of our favorite homemade versions of traditional Chinese takeout foods such as egg rolls, sweet and sour chicken, and fried rice in this recipe collection so you can do just that.
