So maybe you’ve thought about making pickles at home before, because I think at some point every one of us has thought about it and went, “Well it’s just cucumbers and vinegar, right? How hard could it be?” But then the refrigerator aisle at the grocery store shines a hallelujah light on the pickle section, and you’re down the rabbit hole with your favorite brand yet again. (Yes, Claussen, I’m looking at you.) But because I had a spare cucumber in my fridge, I mustered up the gumption this week and tried my hand at making my own dill pickles for the first time. (Spoiler alert: this doesn’t end well.) I basically just winged it and used a regular sized cucumber (apparently there are “pickling cucumbers” that are better for these sort of things). I chopped it up, put the spears in a jar, poured copious amounts of dill, garlic, and distilled vinegar overtop, and voila! I was prepared to have a tasty result. Although, I’ve got to say – they didn’t taste like pickles. Instead, they tasted more like super garlicky vinegar soaked nightmares that needed some serious help. Luckily there are great recipes for these sorts of things, and next time I’ll be sure to get my pickles just right.
