Candy-Coated Caramel Apples

Is it just me, or was the first day of October yesterday? Halloween is just around the corner and I haven’t even bought a pumpkin yet. I live in an apartment complex and I’m not quite sure what the protocol is for trick-or-treating. Do kids go door to door for candy? Or do they forgo the apartment dwellers in hopes of getting better candy in regular neighborhoods? Basically, I don’t know whether or not to buy candy, or how much I might need. The struggle is all too real.

This time of year, I always like to think back on past Halloweens and the costumes that made them memorable. When I was little, my parents dressed me up as a pumpkin, an angel, and a parrot (don’t ask me why). In middle school, I pulled the “pajama kid” deal a few times as a last-minute costume cop-out. Once, my friend and I dressed up as boxes, meaning we literally found giant cardboard boxes to wear and cut out a slot in the top to look through. All you could see were our feet and our eyes, so we were an obvious target for high school boys who thought it would be fun to push us into the grass so we couldn’t get up. I don’t recommend being a box for Halloween, kids, although it always gives me a good laugh when I imagine how ridiculous we must have looked. Just last year, another friend and I dressed up as loofahs. For some reason I just really like pretending I’m an inanimate object, y’all. After all, Halloween is the one day of the year where it’s okay to look absolutely ridiculous. Embrace it!

Most of you probably know what you’re going to be for Halloween by now. The real question is what to do with all that leftover candy! The solution: Candy-Coated Caramel Apples. Try saying that 5 times fast as you watch this video:

She uses M&Ms in the video, but you could use any candy you like for this recipe! Chopped candy bars, sprinkles, gummy worms, candy corn, chocolate chips, or cinnamon candies come to mind, but feel free to get creative with this one. Plus, kids love it! You can coat the apples in caramel, and then let them decorate using their favorite candies. It’s the perfect day-after-Halloween project that the whole family can enjoy!
