Truffles have a deep, dark secret, or at least these do.
Before they were gourmet truffles, a word that conjures French patisseries and romantic evenings enjoyed in Italian wine country, these rolled, fruity desserts were known as date balls.
Remember date balls? They were a staple at the neighborhood potluck, the church picnic, and your grandma’s dessert buffet, and they never seemed to go bad (or as quickly as the rum balls). More often than not, they featured just a few ingredients mashed into an orb and rolled through powdered sugar. And they were delicious.
The ancient Egyptians had no problem embracing the date as nature’s dessert. They made loaves, often shaped into crocodiles for good luck, out of dates, goat’s milk, honey, and coconut, which, come to think of it, doesn’t sound half bad.
We’re not surprised that “date balls” fell by the wayside, only to be replaced by truffles… made with dates. But now that cookie balls and cake balls are en vogue, we’re thinking it’s time to bring them back. Who’s with us?
