From the Southern Foodways Symposium: The Finale

The 2010 Southern Foodways Alliance Symposium wrapped up yesterday morning, with artistic presentations by Jessica Harris, author of High on the Hog: A Culinary Journey from Africa to America, and Theaster Gates and the Black Monks of Mississippi, a group of musicians who gave us a little taste of the musical life of the African-American church. 

The grand culinary finale was a celebration of the Vietnamese influence on the Gulf of Mexico, featuring Chef Qui Ly of Houston's Les Givrals Kahve and Oxford's own Johnny "Snack" Currence of City Grocery, where the brunch was held.  The menu included Cha Gio (Crisp Shrimp and Pork Spring Rolls), Bun Thit Nuong (Char-grilled Pork with Rice Vermicelli), and Ca Phe Sua Da (Coffee Sweetened with Condensed Milk).  The spring rolls and char-grilled pork were absolutely outstanding!

After brunch, the attendees wandered off their different ways, many already looking forward to the 2011 Symposium.  Many thanks to John T. Edge, Mary Beth Lassiter (who went the extra mile to secure Brent some leftovers when he had to leave Saturday's lunch early), and the rest of the Southern Foodways Alliance for such a wonderful and delicious weekend!
